Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to kindergarten at Myrtle Philip! We hope the following information may help to answer questions you may have about our school.

What will my child do all day?

Every day of kindergarten is a busy day! The opportunities will be plentiful for your child to work on individual goals and collaborate with others. Your child will play, engage in physical activities, sing, dance, make music, act, build, participate in literacy and numeracy activities, and explore their world inside and outside. They will also participate in many school wide special events and presentations throughout the year.

What is the routine for snacks and lunches?

The kindergarten students are given breaks for a morning and afternoon snack, as well as lunch. It is recommended you label Tupperware and water bottles with your child’s name. Myrtle Philip is a nut/ peanut free school. Ordering information will be sent home from the PAC in the fall about the optional hot lunch programs. Three times a week the PAC organizes a sushi, pizza, and hot dog lunch.

What is the bathroom routine?

The bathrooms are close to all primary classrooms. They can go anytime by letting the teacher know. They can go on their own, or if they do not feel comfortable, they can go with a friend as long as they don’t disrupt other classes. Classes also have scheduled times to wash up before snack and lunch time.

Will my child be tired?

Full day kindergarten can be tiring for even the most active children. Regular, established bedtime routines can help prepare them for their busy school day. Most families find limiting the number of after school programs during the transition to kindergarten can help maintain a child’s energy.

Can I drop off my child before the bells rings?

A teacher is on supervision beginning at 8:10, but for the younger students, it is recommended that someone is watching your child until the bell rings at 8:25.

Do they need spare clothes?

An extra set of clothes in your child’s backpack is recommended in case of spills or accidents. The students will be playing and learning outside daily so they will need weather appropriate clothing. They will also need running type shoes to wear in the gym. You may choose to leave a pair of inside shoes at school.

How can I find out how my child is doing?

There are three formal reports sent out in the year. In between this time, please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to set up a meeting.

Can I volunteer at the school?

All parents who have completed a criminal records check are welcome to volunteer in the classroom to read, play, help prepare activities for the children, or to help supervise during special events, such as field trips. The Myrtle Philip PAC also has monthly meetings and relies on volunteer parents for their hot lunch programs and special events.

What can I do if my child is showing signs of anxiety?

Please reassure them that school will be a positive place. You can also visit the website: anxietybc.com for more strategies, and talk to your classroom teacher.

How can I support my child at home?

Your child’s teacher will communicate by newsletter, email or website to suggest ways to support classroom learning. Information specifically for parents can also be found on our school district website at: www.sd48.bc.ca.
